Alkemie

Alkemie jewelry is an LA based jewelry design company founded by husband and wife team Dara Gerson & Ashley Lowengrub. The Alkemie collection is forged from 100% reclaimed metals and the leather used comes from sustainable cattle farms and is dyed with earth friendly dye.

Their designs themselves are also inspired by nature. There are amazing cuffs and rings and so many great designs it's hard to really pick a favorite.

The thorn bangles ($99) look like they were picked fresh from a vine and wrapped into a cuff. They would be great stacked in a group of 3 or 4.

Another favorite is the Monkey Ring ($154). I just love the design, but the symbolism is great too. In Hinduism the monkey and god Hanuman bestows longevity upon those who revere it.

Alkemie jewelry is available online, but I originally found it at a little shop in the Mission called Candy Store Collective which is at 3153 16th Street in San Francisco.

Après-ski

I am inspired by a red, white and blue 60's ski sweater that I picked up this weekend at the Alameda Antique Faire for $25.

The one I got is by Demetre and is very heavy wool in navy blue with red stripes and cool spiders on each sleeve.

You can find these vintage wool sweaters on Etsy or eBay, like this one with reindeer on the sleeves for $39. Or, this striped and somewhat nautical version for $23.

Meister and Demetre seem to be a popular brands of this type of sweater and a good keyword search on the vintage sites.

A little out of my price range, but beautiful, is the the Authier arm band sweater ($895) from J. Crew. This sweater is a modern version of the vintage 60's ski sweater. Made in Italy in navy blue with a red stripe at the sleeve it is sporty and elegant at the same time.

These would be great paired with skinny jeans and boots.

Peacock Blue

I must be in a blue mood right now, but am currently obsessed with painting my bedroom a deep peacock blue.

The latest issues of Lonny magazine featured a family room with turquoise walls and silver grey furniture rugs with a few pops of bright red for accent.

I also just saw the French film Le Havre which was shot like an old movie or a play and most of the backdrops were this same color of turquoise with small accents of red.

I think I may just tackle this over the holidays. Stay tuned for before and after pics.

Odylyne

I was just introduced to the clothing line Odylyne at Showroom in Mill Valley. LA designer Stephanie Lampkin named it after the artist Odilion Rion.

Her pieces have a vintage look which attracted me immediately, but still very modern and simple at the same time. The Ariel dress ($281) in a bright navy blue is finished with a vintage looking wrap belt.

I love the silk flutter top ($253) with it's dramatic collar which is available from a great store in the Mission which I need to blog about called Belljar.

Nespresso Milk Frother

My mom and sis bought me a Nespresso machine for my birthday last year and it is the most incredible machine ever. Usually I like to just drink a double espresso with a small bit of sugar, but every now and then it would be nice to mix in a soy cappuccino. Nespresso makes a cool milk frother add-on called the Aeroccino ($99) which makes perfectly frothed milk at the touch of a button.

Boiled Wool Slippers

I already own a pair of these Haflinger boiled wool slippers ($65) that I have worn to death. They are cozy and warm without being too warm and they slip on easily. The only problem is that I tend to wear them outside when I shouldn't. If I get a new pair I promise to take better care of them!

Joe Beef

Joe Beef is hands down my favorite restaurant of all times, but unfortunately it is in Montreal, QC and it's a little hard to get there. The next best thing would be this new cookbook, The Art of Living according to Joe Beef ($40) with recipes from the restaurant as well as stories and tips.

Fur Infinity Scarf

This fur infinity scarf ($160) by 525 America is so soft and cozy I might never take it off. It comes in black, grey and natural, but I definitely like the natural color best.

Polaroid Camera

I used to have a kodak polaroid camera when I was in 3rd grade. I wish I still had that thing. I am in love with the PX 600 Black Frame film ($23.50) that is available for the Polaroid 600 series camera. The only problem is that I need a Polaroid 600 to go with it! I like the Business Edition camera which you can find on eBay for anywhere from $50-$200.

United Nude

It's been a while since I've had the time to blog, but finally with a few days off I'm feeling like it's time to come back to tracking my various finds.

I just discovered these amazing elastic shoes in all kinds of cool colors from United Nude. They come in high heel, medium heel and flats and prices range from$180-$195.

I love how they are kind of bohemian but still modern at the same time. I didn't try them on but have a feeling that the elastic is super comfy.

Miami Vice

I love this look from Lucky magazine with the pink pastel blazer over the bold geometric dress. It's sexy and different, but still work appropriate with just a touch of 80's miami vice.

Asos has a great silk dusty pink jacket ($109). The color is not too bright and I like the slightly oversized fit and wide lapels.

This vintage romper ($30) from Brownbag Vintage on esty.com looks a lot like the graphic dress in the photo, but for an amazing price!

Pair with a chunky necklace and an oversized bag and you have a great summer work outfit.

Flea Market Style

I just discovered Flea Market Style magazine, a new magazine chock full of ideas for using flea market finds in conventional and unconventional ways.

I was so inspired by this outdoor table setting from the latest issue. Soup tureens stand in for vases and a simple burlap runner dresses up a plain white tablecloth.

I love the mix of antique plates and goblets with new wine glasses too. The whole effect is feminine and festive, but unfussy.

Paint it Black

I wouldn't think to paint a small space black, but I love the effect of this bathroom painted in black in the June/July issue of Lonny Magazine.

The bright spots of color from the towels and Chinese stool as well as the vintage photos that line the walls give it such a posh and cozy feel.

The contrast of the white tile shower and white pedastal sink are spectacular against the glossy black paint.

I Sing the Body Electric

That bright 80's electric blue is back and showing up everywhere right now. I love it paired with white or black as in this look. That pop of color against a neutral background is amazing.

It's easy to recreate this look for not too much money. There are a variety of vintage electric blue skirts to be found on etsy.com in the $20-$40 range. For example I like this vintage silk floral skirt ($28).

You can also find more plain options like this longer linen blend skirt ($28) with side pockets.

A pair of bright blue pumps like these suede Steve Madden heels ($70) finishes off the look. You can also find some vintage blue heels on etsy.com.

Pair the skirt with a white t-shirt or an eyelet blouse and you are ready to go from work to evening.

The Kooples

I just discovered the French boutique chain The Kooples which carries cool understated basics, with just a bit of an edge. Unfortunately they do not yet have an outpost in the US, but they do have a webstore.

I love the quilted leather jacket (395 euros) which looks great with jeans or dressed up with a skirt for work.

The draped tulip skirt (125 euros) in rayon/polyester has a metallic sheen to it that almost looks like leather.

I also love the buckle wedges (195 euros) which I would wear with absolutely everything right now--from sun dresses and shorts to skinny jeans.

I love the super wide chain bracelet (80 euros) with rows of chains connected to a studded leather clasp. So dramatic and cool!

Tip Toe Through the Tulips

The tulip skirt is everywhere this season. I like this White & Warren tulip skirt ($90) in rayon/spandex. This skirt is available in neutral khaki, bright cherry and black.

Elaine Kim's matte jersey tulip skirt ($275) in black is longer and more sophisticated. I love it paired here with a drapey blouse and wide belt.

From the Zara spring collection, this tulip-shaped bottom is more pant than skirt, but features the same drapey feminine silhouette that I like.

Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls

Whether drapey or ruffled the waterfall jacket or vest is a must-have for summer. This drapey Ever Eros silk vest ($135) from shopbop.com. features ruching at the shoulders and an off-center tie closure at the wrap front. Can be worn open or closed with on-seam hip pockets and an asymmetrical hem.

The Elaine Kim Damara ruffle vest ($295) in seaweed and cotton poplin, is a dramatic piece that can be worn as a sleeveless jacket or as a cowl-neck top with the side pinned. Also great belted.

From Topshop this khaki sleeveless watefall vest ($90) has drapey side pockets in addition to the waterfall neckline.

This J. Crew silk waterfall jacket ($198) has almost a tribal feel with the nubby texture and pattern of the fabric. Would look great for work or dressed down as it is here.

I Heart Montreal

I Want to Ride My Bicycle

Portland, OR based company Vanilla Bicyles make extraordinary custom bicycles that are anything but plain Vanilla.

I love the commuter bikes shown here which make me want to move back to Montreal and bike to work. Or, run errands while looking fabulous and chic with a scarf tied around my neck.

The whole philosophy of Vanilla Bicycles is to stay small and keep production low. Unfortunately what that means for Vanilla fans is that the wait for a custom Vanilla bicycle is currently over 5 years!

Maybe we someday I will be lucky enough to own one. Quality and craftsmanship cost so at least I have some time to save up...

A little more in my price-range, European-style Public Bikes offers a range of city bikes all with a ton of style. The M3, three-speed bike ($750) is available in cream, orange or powder blue.

Mariposa Bakery

I was ecstatic to find an outpost of the gluten-free bakery, Mariposa, at the Ferry Building last week. I tried their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and was blown away. I have tried a lot of gluten-free baked goods, but these cookies I swear are just as good (or maybe better?) than regular cookies.

I'm anxious to try some of their other items like the sour cream coffee cake (left) or their gluten and dairy-free breads, bagels and pizza crusts.

Magic Cobbler

I wasn't aware that I needed sparkle boots until I saw them on DailyCandy last week. Each pair of shoes from from LA designer Marisa Spinella is handmade in her studio like the RubyK boots ($474) at left.

The collection is called Penelope and Coco which represents the two sides of the designer's personality--one more of a classic, vintage-lover, the other a bold risk-taker.

Probably a bit easier to pull off and more my style are the Capone boots ($484). These otherwise simiple combat boots feature a tough strip of spikes and studs up the back.

Beach House

As the weather turns warmer bring elements of the beach into your home with these beachy accessories. I love this octopus hook ($45) from anthropologie.com. Total size is 8.75"H x 8"W and projects 1.5" from the wall.

This weathered driftwood mirror ($128) from West Elm brings beach style for a great price! This mirror would be great over a bathroom sink like in my blog post from June, 2008.

I love these seashell measuring spoons ($12) also from Anthropologie. These stoneware scallop shells come in a set of two double-sided spoons and are dishwasher safe.

I also love this rope and jute chandelier ($798) although it's a bit pricey. Even the shades of this light fixture are made of rope. This fixture would be a great in breakfast nook or in-kithchen eating area.

Watercolors

Like pieces of fine art, I'm loving the painterly patterns on these Spring dresses.

The Mina Stone silk dress ($345) features two front pockets a gathered natural waist and cross back detail. Throw a sweater or jacket over for work and bare all on those warm Spring and Summer days. This dress is available at stevenalan.com, but I'm sure it won't last long.

I especially love the colors in this Lia Kes one-shoulder dress ($356) which reminds me of the sunset on a warm tropical island. The dress is also available in a more white print (ideology). Both dresses are available online at The Marin Store.

I've blogged about New York transplant and designer Lia Kes before and I absolutely love her designs. She has a new shop in the Marina on Fillmore.

The Blurred Boundaries dress ($178) from anthropologie.com definitely looks like a painter just put down their brush. Love the lush colors that flow across the a-line skirt.

Online comments about the dress say the fit is strange. So, this is one I would definitely want to try on first. However, the print is oustanding!

My Top 5 for Spring

Here's my take on the top five pieces you can add to your closet this Spring for an instant update. These pieces don't have to break the bank either, you can find great versions at economical retailers like H&M and Zara.

White Blazer

A white blazer is an essential Spring/Summer piece. Paired with neutrals, denim and even black it looks light and fresh. White also makes even the palest skin look sun-kissed.

I love this Madewell cotton Garcon blazer ($135) paired here with shorts and heels. However, for an even better deal, Zara makes an outstanding white cotton blazer accented with black buttons for only $59 or a linen version for $99.

Pleated Slouch Pant

Yes, 80's pleats are back, but this time around they feature a more modern silhouette that is nipped in at the ankles and cropped. Worn with heels, oxfords or gladiators they are a great updated Spring basic.

The Vince pleated slouch pant ($195) pictured on the right is available in a great khaki taupe. Although you can find inexpensive versions of this pant at stores like Zara for $79 or less like these Lyocell pleated trousers (left).

Drapey T-shirt

T-shirts this season are less fitted and more boxy. Some are cropped and super oversized and others are more refined. Look for styles that are sheer and flowy like this Wilt tissue jersey pocket tee ($135).

I especially like the burned out tees that come in an assortment of shapes and styles. This Alice and Olivia tee ($118) with rolled sleeves is more 80's style.

I picked up a great burned out drapey tee with a v-neck and pocket for only $12.99 at Zara.

Girly Skirt

There are so many options out right now in this category it's hard to choose a favorite. Ruffle skirts are all the rage. I like them paired with boots like this ramie/cotton ruffle skirt ($39.90) from Zara which is available in cream, khaki and olive green.

Petticoat skirts are also making a comeback like this short petticoat skirt ($65) from American Apparel available in black or white that can be worn alone or under another skirt. You can find them in knee-length versions as well which is more my speed.

Or, for a more refined version, opt for a simple skirt in the same shape with like this cotten & linen skirt ($59.90) with elastic waistband from Zara which closely resembles the Wren skirt I showed in an earlier blog post.

Chambray Shirt

If you have not succombed to this trend yet, there is still time to get on board! They look great paired with a ruffled skirt or lacey skirt like this look at left from Zara's lookbook.

You can also wear them like a jacket over a flowered dress or romper (right). Note the heels with socks which is another easy update I love for Spring!

You can find these shirts at every price point and from more fitted styles to boyfriend shirts. A few examples are the the UrbanOutfitters boyfriend chambray shirt ($48) or the Gap chambray western shirt ($44.99).

RIP August Mill Valley store?

It appears that one of my favorite Mill Valley boutiques is no more. I drove by yesterday and the windows were blacked out and the space is currently for rent on craigslist. The August website is still online, but doesn't appear to have been updated recently.

I got an amazing pair of Golden Goose tuxedo pants there as well as some handprinted t-shirts, homemade soaps and cool locally made jewelry.

I am so bummed that the economy is driving out all sorts of interesting shops. I guess I should have done a better job of spending money! Hoping the shop rebounds in a new location...

Tangled Up in Chains

Right now I'm craving a big bunch of tangled chains that I can pair with t-shirts and a boyfriend jacket. You can definitely seek out individual pieces to combine, but here's a few pieces that are already combined for you.

J. Crew

I love the new Fenton & Fallon line for J.Crew. The Carrington side drape necklace ($275) is an amazing tangle of crystals, brass and silver ox-plated steel chains. I like the mix of girly sparkle with more of a hard-edged rocker vibe.

Alice & Olivia

The Alice & Olivia Multi-chain Necklace ($155) is also really cool with a tangled mix of silver and gold-toned chains. What I like about this one is the variety of lengths of the various chains.

Savage Salvage

From Etsy seller Savage Salvage come some amazing recycled vintage tangled chain necklaces. I think my favorite in all of these is the Decay & Divination necklace ($108) made of vintage crucifixes. It's a bold statement, but I would totally wear this.

A little more low-key, but equally fabulous is the Sweetness Silver necklace ($85) with a tangle of chain, pearls and rhinestones.

Urban Outfitters

Not near as stunning or funky, but with a much better price tag, the Urban Outfitters Cascading Chain Knot necklace ($28) is a layered multi-chain necklace in two-toned metal.

Kitchen of My Dreams

I absolutely love this loft-like farmhouse set in an apple grove in Sebastopol, California that was featured in the April issue of Dwell Magazine (Fertile Grounds).

The house is made of concrete which was built via a series of C-shaped modules from the same system used to compose the structural system. I love that it is so light an airy and blends in with the country surroundings.

However, what I really love the most is the kitchen/dining area. This is truly the kitchen of my dreams. The porportions are huge! I love the the two islands--one concrete and the other made out of a giant slap of cypress and held up with sawhorses.

I also love the light fixtures which were made by the one of the owners of out branches, crystal pieces and strung bulbs. The whole effect is a bit rustic and casual while still modern.

Uniformly Chic

My must-have item for Spring and Summer this year is a utilitarian jumpsuit. I love these 70's inspired versions from French clothiers A.P.C. and Zadig & Voltaire which are simple and very chic.

The A.P.C. Short-sleeved jumpsuit ($280) is available for pre-order on the A.P.C online store. Made of 100% cotton in a deep blue indigo with a drawstring waist and contrasting color buttons.

I also love the long-sleeved A.P.C. Disco jumpsuit ($330) in a burnt orange color which appears to be completely sold out online. Dommage!

The Zadig & Voltaire jumpsuit ($400) has more of a military vibe. Available as shorts in khaki or in a long pant version in a dark grey (coke) color.

I'm going to see if I can find a vintage version of these jumpsuits that are more in my price range on Etsy.com.

Georgie

I love the Spring collection from Georgie--an L.A. line from designer Julia Chase whose motto is "it's all about the fit".

I especially like the boyfriend canvas pant shown here with a simple fitted white shirt. These pants are currently available at Showroom in Mill Valley.

I also like the metallic flared lace pants ($215) which would be great dressed up or down for summer. These pants are available online at Sway and Cake.

Wren

I'm obsessed by this star t-shirt from the clothing line Wren which was shown in the latest edition of Lucky Magazine.

I love that the stars are silk-screened on the inside of the shirt as well. The shirt is not up on the website yet, but I'm going to keep checking back.

The Bonjour Tristesse t-shirt/dress ($78) is also really cool. I would pair it with a cropped tuxedo jacket and leggings.

This shirt would also look great with the sequined shrug ($495) although it's a little out of my price range.

I like the shrug paired here with the cotton skirt with a metallic waistband ($198) for a just a hint of the unexepcted.

Cottage in a Day

These modular pre-fab houses by Cottage in a Day are green and energy efficient, but also cool and stylish.

The construction is based on the use of structural insulated panels which provide superior strength, sound reduction, and energy efficiency.

The shed-style metal roof, low maintenance cement board siding and movable shutter doors are perfect for the weekend cottage, but I could also see living in one of these full-time. Built to withstand exreme weather conditions these would be perfect for Quebec.

I like the simple plywood interior and the open airy feel of the living spaces.

Pricing is really reasonable with the the most basic model starting at just $49k and going up to $200k for the large structures.

Since this is a Michigan-based company these structures conform to Michigan state standards. Plans would need to be approved for use outside this state.

Road Warrior

I am loving this black leather cuff by YMK for Castro ($274). Features slits all around interspersed with copper rings and a 2-strap buckle closure with a chain detail.

This cuff fits in nicely with my current post-apocolyptic clothing obsession--tough, yet still refined and pretty.

I Want You (for the US Army)

On my trip down to L.A. a couple weeks ago it seemed like everyone was wearing an army jacket of some kind. Some heavily embroidered, some just basic and oversized.

I love the Black Label army jackets ($110) from Planet Blue. Each one is unique with patches, embroidery or stud embellishments. Unfortunately they tend to sell out the minute they are posted online!

I'm thinking of looking for a plain one at American Rag and then doing my own embellishments. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Romper Room

I would normally avoid a piece like the romper, but these examples of how to style a romper from shopbop.com actually make me want one! Using the Joie Amara romper ($298) as a base they created multiple looks--one for each season. Here's three of them:

The Aqua silk patterned romper ($78) is an affordable alternative to the Joie version. Available from bloomingdales.com. I don't like the pattern, quite a much but definitely like the price better!

Denim Blazers

One of the must-have items for Spring this year is the denim blazer. They are available in a variety of washes and styles to work into either your work or weekend wardrobe. Here's a few of my picks:

Rock & Republic

The Rock & Republic Brooks jacket ($228) is a shrunken style jacket with a bit of stretch. It features peaked lapels, a one-button closer and flap pockets at the waist. I love how it is styled here with white jeans.

Gap

The Gap denim blazer ($88) is a more casual jacket in a faded waded. A great weekend jacket with darker wash jeans or thrown over a flirty floral dress or romper.

Charlotte Russe

The Charlotte Russe denim blazer ($17.49) is a bargain, but I'm sure it won't last long. In a dark wash denim with a notched lapel and single button closure, a floral interior lining. It's even machine washable! I like that this jacket could be dressed up or down.

Mango

The Mango denim blazer ($109.90) is more of a boyfriend style blazer. I love this look for work paired with trousers and a feminine blouse or it would look great with a crisp pair of white pants for summer and a bright top.

Sinners and Saints

On my recent trip down to L.A. I was excited to discover the UK clothing store Allsaints which has an outpost on Robertson Blvd with lines for men, women and children. The esthetic is very post-apocolyptic--muted tones of grey, plum and black which I am loving right now. Graphic t-shirts like the one at left mix with suiting.

Combat boots, leather bags, flannel shirts and vests all figure prominently with a vibe that's part vintage, part modern, part hippy, part rockstar. I love the flannel shirts with cutoff sleeves ($120).

The military boots ($250) already have that vintage patina. and are available in chocolate brown or black.

There are more refined pieces too. Tailored jackets, skirts and pants all have a slight edge like the Cameo jacket ($305) with ruffled neckline and nipped in waist with subtle pleating.

Dresses range from the complex draped and asymetrical looks, to the more simple silhouettes. I love the Vallerma dress ($320) which a corseted bodice and a flattering twisted silhouette in black cotton fabric.

Cuckoo for Kuko Bites

These new gluten-free, dairy free cookies from Full Bloom called Kuko Bites are outstanding! Chock-full of goji berries and cacao nibs they have a great flavor and, more importantly, excellent texture. I really feel like I'm treating myself to a regular chocolate chip cookie.

I found them at Whole Foods Market in the North Bay, but I am sure they will start showing up at other speciality markets soon.

Fire it Up!

I've been wanting a firepit for our patio for those cool northern california evenings for some time now. I've seen some really expensive ones that I love, but I think I've finally found a good balance between design and cost.

The Design Within Reach cast iron bowl ($375) is shaped like a cone so that the lower bowl collects ash and elevates the flames off the ground to better dissipate heat. The cone grate in the upper bowl creates an air pocket and also f0cuses the fire in the center for a more efficient burn.

There is an optional grill that you can buy for those beach bonfire/BBQ's as well!

DIY Rustic Bench

Although I love DIY projects, I'm rarely that satisfied with the results. However, in the Feb/March 2010 issue of ReadyMade magazine there is a DIY project that I think is pretty foolproof and it looks incredible.

The project takes a thick piece of floor joist and attaches metal legs to it to form a bench. The wood can be found in a salvage yard and the legs can either be found or can be ordered from hairpinlegs.com ($14-$30 per leg)

I love the combination of rustic with modern. This bench would look great by our front door for putting on shoes and boots or around a low table on the patio.

I will post my results after I try this one!

Bahama Collection from Red Sofa

I absolutely love the lastest collection from Montreal-based jewelry company Red Sofa. I am a huge fan of jewelry inspired by nature anyway. My problem now is narrowing down which piece I like the best!

The crab claw necklace ($85) is cast from a real crab claw found on a trip to the Caribbean. In sterling silver with a 22" chain. There are also crab claw cufflinks ($95) which would make a great Valentine's gift for that special guy.

The crab shell necklace ($90) is another great piece also cast from a real crab shell. What I like is that this piece has been oxidized for a half shiny, half matte look. This one comes on an 18” long chain. The crab shell is 1¾” across.

Finally, I love the new snake ring ($98) which is oxidized to really bring out the texture of the snake's body. I love the detail and the edginess of this ring. This may need to be a Valentine's treat for myself!

Gladiator Wedges

I wanted a pair of Cynthia Vincent gladiator heels ($400) last season, but the steep price tag held me back. This style is available again for Spring, but unfortunately the price tag hasn't changed.

So, I was really happy to discover the Jessica Simpson gladiator wedge ($88) which is almost identical and only a fraction of the price. These are available in black, dark brown and tan.

In the February/March 2010 edition of ReadyMade magazine there is a feature story about El Cosmico which is a luxury hotel where you stay in these super hip airstream trailers.

The design of these trailers is amazing and is the subject for a whole separate blog post, but I was really taken with a vintage painting of the Garuda on the wall of one of the trailers.

That lead me on a search for these vintage Hindu god posters and I discovered Om from India your "friendly neighborhood god print dealer".

They have an amazing collection of vintage prints that you can browse through online. Unfortunately they are not available for sale online. However, if I am ever in New York I am definitely going to look them up.

5 Preview

I need one of these "underground" t-shirts ($87) by Italian brand 5Preview. I love the reference to classic fashion brands and icons and the general irreverant nature of their designs.

Unfortunately my favorite design with the chanel logo appears to be out of production. Hopefully a version will be available again.

I just bought the most amazing dress from designer Lia Kes who has a new boutique on Fillmore St. in San Francisco. I can't find a picture of the dress online, but it is a sexy asymetrical knit dress with a zippered cowl neck for a rough edge with ruching down the side. Really a killer dress.

The dress at left was another great design that I was tempted by.

In fact, it was hard not to walk away with more. I love, love, love her sexy yet strong designs that really flatter a woman's body. There is also a bit of the unexpected in her designs like a backless button-down tunic shirt, a bit of feathers or sequins or the drapey cords at the back of her t-shirts.

The Doctor is In

I never really went through a teenage rebellion phase and maybe I'm playing that out now because I'm really craving a pair of Dr. Marten's boots. These boots also fit in really well with my whole post-apocalyptic fashion obsession.

I love the vintage 1914 boots ($200). Yes, they are more expensive, but if you are going to do it, why not get the original? As of 2003 Dr. Martens moved their production to China and Thailand, but in 2007 they started making this vintage line again in the UK. These boots are made to the original spec in the Dr. Marten's factory in Wollaston, England.

Aside from the vintage style, I also like the Triumph 1914 mid-calf boot ($150). This style can be worn laced up tight or folded down to reveal the plaid lining. They remind me of Judd Nelson's character in the Breakfast Club.

I also like the lightweight tall metallic Cato boot ($150) which has a zipper on the inside for easy on and off. I'm a sucker for anything silver and I love the burnished effect that these boots have. They are also available in a less-flashy black finish.

Post-Apocalyptic Fashion

I just saw "Book of Eli" and although it wasn't the best movie, I was inspired by the character Solara's (Mila Kunis) end-of-world fashion (minus the machine gun).

I love the heavily layered look with a vest, scarf, combat boots, plaid shirt and the aviator sunglasses. The movie was shot in muted sepia tones which I like as well.

Here's a few recent finds which I think play well into this theme.

Layering

I'm loving the cashmere and leather sleeves ($235) from Elaine Kim's latest collection. Paired with a sleeveless dress or tank they would make a simple outfit instantly interesting.

I also love the cashmere shrug ($275) from Elaine Kim with silk ties that hang down that can be styled as a wrapped scarf or draped loosely as in these photos.

Army Pants

The unisex Fisherman's Pant ($388) in army green from Harmon definitely has that end of the world vibe. Baggy with a slightly dropped crouch I love them cuffed with heels as in this picture or paired with boots. Available at Oaknyc.com.

A little bit more affordable is the new cargo ($59)from Gap. I like them worn a little big and cuffed with heels as in this picture. I might buy them a size larger than usual.

Make it Work!

I am so excited Project Runway season 7 launched last week. As a huge fan of this show I often get inspired when I watch and think, "I can do that!". I am thinking about ordering the Fashionflat Sketchpad ($14.95) from Hokey Croquis so I can actually put down some of my design ideas.

These notepads come pre-printed with front and back female croquis that disappear when photocopied or scanned.

Each notepad has 40 pages of 8 1/2 x 11 sheets that are perforated for easy removal as well as space for fabric swatches, notes, etc.

Wall Art for Less

I don't normally to decorate my walls with stuff you can buy at a chain store, but have to say that CB2's limited edition prints and "one of a finds" are pretty cool and very reasonably priced.

Cypress Row Print
I'm loving Photographer Brian Everett's cypress row print ($249) which was shot with a Holga camera in b/w and then colored.

This is large-size print on canvas at 48" square. For the size the price is extremely reasonable. I think I've spent almost as much trying to blow up one of my own photos to not even half this size.

Madhubani Painting

This "one of a find" hand-painted Madhubani painting ($149) was originally $199, but has now been marked down so I doubt it will last much longer. Each painting is hand-painted by Indian artist Lalita Devi who is paralyzed, but paints with help of family and friends. The art form of Madhubani paintings is passed down from mother to daughter in a remote region of northern India and now helps support the village.

Urban Outfitters sometimes has some interesting finds too. Right now I'm liking this giant cardboard stag head ($52) which could look very modern and simple in the right space. The deer measures 12"w, 9"d, 16"h.

Road Trippin'

Over the Christmas holidays we completed our 5th roadtrip across the United States. This time we took a more Southern route following Route 66 for much of the journey. This is definitely not hte quickest route, but we were trying to avoid bad weather and also thought it would be an interesting route.

Places we stopped on this trip that we would recommend or go back to again:
Williams, AZ

This is a cute old "mainstreet USA" town which serves as a gateway to the Grand Canyon. You can take the train from Williams to the Grand Canyon.

We stayed at the El Rancho motel. An old motel court motel that takes dogs, has a park across the street to walk them, a laundramat next door. Rooms have a microwave, coffee pot, mini-fridge, satellite t.v. and they have an outdoor pool. Not fancy, but definitely a good value for the price.

We had a good breakfast at the Pine Country Restaurant before we had to get on our way again. Hopefully we will come back and explore this area more next time.

New Mexico

Our car broke down in Albuquerque which ate into the time we were going to spend checking out Santa Fe. However, what little we did see of New Mexico was absolutely stunning. We will definitely plan a separate trip just to explore New Mexico.

Cadillac Ranch (outside Amarillo, TX)

This is a fun quick roadside stop to stretch your legs and walk the dog. This art installation was originally built in 1974 by The Ant Farm, a San Francisco art collective. Graffiti-covered cars are half-buried, nose-down in a row along interstate 40. Cool photo opportunity.

St Louis, MO

We spent New Year's Eve in St Louis, but didn't get a chance to really explore the city. We missed out on trying two of the city's specialties: "concrete" and "toasted ravioli".

On our next trip back we want to be sure to visit Ted Drewe's for the frozen custard.

We also wanted to try Trattoria Marcella one of the many oustanding Italian restaurants on "the hill". Definitely more to do and see!

Nashville, TN

We didn't see that much of Nashville, but would definitely like to come back here. The downtown and outlying areas were beautiful and there seemed to be a ton of musical and cultural offerrings as well as being a big college town. We will definitely be back in Spring or Summer.

Hotel Indigo

We stayed in a couple Hotel Indigo's during our trip (Nashville and St Louis). This hotel chain reminds me a lot of the aLoft hotels. Funky design at an affordable price. What's great is they take pets. In Nashville we had a huge room right downtown with a sitting area which was really nice. Each hotel has it's own style.

I bought a pound of Mother Lode French Roast coffee at Berkeley Bowl last week and it is my new favorite. The flavor is amazing and the roast is super dark, but not overly acidic.

I Hate Perfume

I am always looking for that unique scent or perfume that will wear well and not give me a headache. I was exited to find CB I Hate Perfume during a quick trip to Dish in San Francisco.

These scents created by perfumer and artist Christopher Brosius are exciting and different from the usual perfume and can be used as personal or home fragrance. All scents are available as essential oils or spray and both are alcohol free.

I bought Burning Leaves ($60) which sounds strange, but reminds me of my country house with the smell of maple leaves and fires in the fireplace. I wish that Dish carried a wider selection because there are so many of these I would like to try. In the Library was also tempting, but I wish they had had Russian Caravan, Cedarwood Tea or M3 November which all sound amazing.

Digital technology has made it easy for even the amateur photographer to achieve amazingly perfect shots. That's probably everything old school and imperfect is so popular right now. Here's some retro-inspired photography accessories and equipment for that photo enthusiast on your list.

Lo-fi Digital

This Diana lens and adapter for Canon DSLR ($60) is absolutely genius. Now you don't have to switch between film and digital to achieve the look of a Diana camera. Blackbird, Fly

This plastic twin-lens reflex camera ($140) is a remake of the Japanese design developed in the 1920's with one lens for the view-finder and one for shooting. Fuji Instax Instant Camera

Digital is cool, but sometimes you want the immediacy of a physical photo. This next generation poloroid from Fuji ($90) will print credit card sized photos on demand. Retro Camera Straps

I still have my 70's woven tapestry camera strap for my Canon SLR. You can find vintage straps on eBay or check out these new straps with that vintage look for your DLSR camera. The Boneca Linda shop on Etsy features a variety of woven straps like this madison strap ($35) at right.

I've blogged about Kat Straps before. These straps are handmade by a weaver named Kat and are available in all kinds of colors and cool designs like strap #28 at the left for $38, but all of her designs are amazing.

Now is the time to stock up on slippers because after the holidays it is extremely hard to find a pair. Here's a few that I'm considering in my search for the perfect winter foot-warmer.

Boiled Wool

I love the simplicity of these colorful boiled wool slippers ($60) from Garnet Hill. Made in Germany with latex soles so you can go outside with them. Unfortunately the orange ones (my favorite) are no longer available, but if you happen to like pink or blue these look great.

Knit Booties

These cozy knit booties ($69) from Viva Terra are hand-made by a small group of indigenous people in South America. Made of cotten and wool with agave fiber soles for slip protection they are available in natural or grey.

Duvet Slippers

These quilted nylon slippers ($19.95) from Baffin are like mini-duvets for your feet. More like slippers than socks since they do not have a rubber sole, these slippers look comfortable and easy to pack for those weekend ski trips. 'Tis the season of holiday parties and gatherings not to mention Christmas gift-giving. I'm trying to be a bit more organized this year and start early. Here are some ideas for hostess gifts or Christmas gifts in the home and entertaining theme.

Teapot

The Raj Teapot ($45) from Sundance is a beautiful reproduction of the teapots used by the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company on voyages between Bombay to London in the early 1900's.

Rootbeer for Grownups

I am still mourning the loss of Domino Magazine and Blueprint. However, I am now somewhat mollified by the launch of the new online magazine Lonny.

Created by some of the former staff members from Domino this online mag offer a similar experience with pages that turn and loads of beautiful images and photos. An added benefit is that you can click on something that interests you and get taken right to the website.

I was especially drawn to the country house spread. Love the use of antlers as a towel rack in the bathroom and the old skirted sink--a great mix of rustic and refined.

There's plenty of content to dig into in the first issue and lots of inspiration for the house as well as personal style. Look for the next issue out in December!

I just made my first batch of the blueberry maple muffins ($7.99). They are definitely not the overly sweet white blueberry muffins you would get in safeway. They feel healthy, but still very delicious. Good texture and not too sweet with lots of blueberries in every bite.

Note, you do have to provide your own blueberries and maple syrup so be sure to have those items on hand if you want to make these.

I have to say I was a huge fan of the Flashdance look in the 80's--the sweatshirt with the ripped out neck slipping down over the shoulder to expose a white undershirt.

Sequin trousers and leggings are everywhere for Fall and seeing them on Heidi Klum last week on Project Runway dressed down with a loose tunic top and vest got me hooked.

There are a ton of options out there right now, but some are less "sequiny" than others. I like the ones that are completely saturated in sequins the best.

These Express sequin leggings ($98) are reasonably priced and would look great with a loose fitting black tunic top and flats or a long boyfriend blazer, heels and a t-shirt.

The Mango sequin trouser ($99) has a looser fit. Love it paired with this tuxedo jacket. These are not quite as sparkly as some, but like how they flow.

I just picked up a pair of Phillip Lim silk lounge pants at deep discount from Jeremy's in San Francisco. These baggy charmeuse silk pants are cropped and feature side pockets and a drawstring waist.

I'm so excited to mix these into my fall/winter wardrobe with heels and a boyfriend blazer or a belted cardigan. I may just live in them they are so comfortable.

I blogged about B'Sbee clothing months ago when I had picked up the most fab men's flannel shirt for myself. I literally live in this shirt when I'm at home. It's the softest, snuggly flannel and comes in this amazing color combo of olive green and bright blue. I bought a men's small for myself, but this shirt would be great for that man in your life as well.

I love this contempory Navajo bracelet with a deep green Armenian turquoise stone ($850). An unusual color for turquoise with flecks of copper running through it. I like the dramatic simplicity of the silver setting.

This vintage Navajo concho was reshaped and set on a piece of saddle leather ($550) making it a blend of old and new. Has a buckle fastener so it can be adjusted to fit different size wrists.

This vintage coral and turquoise ring ($225) has a very modern and unusual setting. Looks like it could have been crafted by a contempory artist. Navajo made in size 7 1/2.

Who knew that JCPenny had gotten so hip? Their I 'Heart' Ronson line has several cute pieces at really great price points. Most of the pieces are less than $40!

The pegged pants ($29.99) in grey are tempting, but I wouldn't order online without knowing how they fit.

Seems like the classic trench coat is the It jacket for Fall. Here's a few versions of the iconic staple to consider.

I never thought I would be a huge Liz Claiborne fan, but the 2009 Fall collection designed by Isaac Mizrahi is supringsly fresh and edgy--and affordable! I love the bright color palette and the sense of fun.

I love, love, love the plaid suit. The blazer is $179 and the pants are $139. I absolutely must have these pieces for Fall. So far this suit is not yet available, but I keep checking lizclaiborne.com so I can snatch it up the minute it arrives.

I also like the plaid dress from this collection which is $189. The dress could be worn now and then as it cools off could be layered with a turtleneck underneath and tights.

Gluten-free Cake

While I was in Quebec this summer I made up batches of this gluten-free cake mix and smothered it in fresh berries.

This cake mix makes the lightest, fluffiest, most moist vanilla cake ever! Even people who are not avoiding gluten rave about this cake when I make it.

You can make this cake with milk, or soy milk depending on lactose sensitivies. It couldn't be easier to mix up and I have gotten great results every time.

All this July rain here in Quebec is making me think about Fall sweaters, jackets and boots. I just got the latest issue of Martha Stewart Living and got inspired by their article on classics. In this economy it seems wiser to splurge on a few well-made, quality basics that will never go out of style. Here's what I'm coveting right now:

Barbour Jacket

This 100-year old British company makes, "...a wardrobe of clothes for country pursuits, country living and for those that simply love the country".

This ladies flyweight international wax quilted jacket ($354) is not only practical, but completely fierce. It would be pefect for the cool, wet night in the country, but I would wear it in the city too.

There are many lesser priced styles I would gladly take as well--especially the quilted jackets. Note: these jackets are in UK sizes so a US size 8 would be a UK 12.

Aran Sweater

I love these classic wool fisherman's sweaters. Hammacher Schlemmer has these hand knit classics on sale right now for only $89.95. Made from merino wool is creamy ecru, I'm sure at this price they won't last long.

Hermes Scarf

I've never been into the big status brands, but I have to say that the Hermes scarf is one item that I would consider splurging on. Each scarf can take up to 1000 hours to complete from design to handstitching the hem.

I love this Christopher Columbus design ($375) in shades of brown, orange and green.

Blueberry BBQ sauce

I blogged about this recipe in June 2008, but it really bears repeating. I just whipped up a batch with fresh Quebec blueberries and grilled out on the deck. Deee-lish! The sweetness of the blueberries with a subtle kick is a perfect compliment to the pork.

Pork Tenderloin with Blueberry Barbecue Sauce

INGREDIENTS

Sauce:
2 pints (5 to 6 cups) blueberries
2/3 cup honey
1/2 cup ketchup
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
1/2 cup chopped shallots
1 Tbsp. grated fresh ginger
2 tsp. fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp. dry mustard Meat:
2 one-pound pork tenderloins
Salt and freshly ground pepper

To make sauce: Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; reduce heat and simmer until thickened, about 45 minutes. Divide sauce between 2 bowls. Set aside.

To make meat: Preheat grill to medium. Season pork with salt and pepper. Sear, turning to cook all sides, 10 to 15 minutes. Brush with half the barbecue sauce, turning frequently, until pork is thoroughly glazed, about 10 minutes more (a meat thermometer should read about 150°). Set aside and let rest 5 minutes. Carve crosswise; serve with remaining barbecue sauce.

Kicking Horse Coffee

I am a huge fan of dark roast coffee, but never found a dark roast I really liked in Montreal--they were too bitter or not full-bodied enough. I would even go so far as to bring a pound of Peet's coffee with me on my trips up here. Well, all that has changed! Kicking Horse coffee which is located in British Columbia makes an outstanding dark roast coffee aptly named Kick Ass. I actually think I may bring some of this with me back to California.

I have not tried the other roasts yet. Although on the website they provide a handy flavor guide to each roast as well as information about the blend and where the beans come from.

Best of all this coffee is organic and free trade certified so you can feel good about your habit.

Natural Nails

Fingers and Toes nail salon in Mill Valley first turned me onto this nail polish brand, Zoya. I was naturally drawn to the rich hues and color choices and didn't realize until I did a little bit of research that Zoya polish is all natural, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Camphor and DBP (dibutyl phthalate) free too!

Besides having great colors this line is exremely long-wearing and durable. I love the mossy green metallic called Irene. Or, the bright-neon orange called Paz and Ki, the plum with green metallic highlights.

The Fashion Show

Finally a replacement to fill the void left by Project Runway! The Fashion Show is Bravo's new fashion design show now that Lifetime network snatched away Project Runway. However, why Lifetime can't seem to churn out a new season of Project Runway while Bravo issues a brand new show is a mystery!

I had planned to remain faithful to Project Runway, but I watched the first episode of Bravo's new show online today and I have to say that I don't really miss the old show (especially after being kept waiting so long). A few things are different--less focus on the models for example. However, the parts that are absent are not parts I cared about anyway! I do miss Tim Gunn, but you can't have everything.

The Fashion Show airs Thursday's at 10:00 pm or you can watch full-length episodes on the bravotv.com website.

D.I.Y. Studded Sneakers

However, at least for me the price tag of $525 is completely out of the question. I'm sure a lot of hand work went into these and, if you can afford them I say go for it! If not, with a little time and patience, I think this is a perfect D.I.Y. project.

First get yourself a pair of regular converse black hi-tops ($45). Urbanoutfitters.com carries these in white or black or you can get a variety of colors from converse.com.

Then purchase metal studs in bulk. Studsandspikes.com has a great selection. For this project you would need the pyramid studs in both small and standard sizes (a bag of 100 is $3.30).

Here's a tutorial on how to stud leather. For canvas the step of poking holes can be skipped. I'll let you know how mine turn out. Happy studding!

By the Numbers

Our house is tucked away in a grove of oak trees down a steep and curvy driveway so we've been looking for big house numbers to better identify our house for guests or delivery people. Here's a few options I've found that would be great for house numbers even if your house is in plain sight.

Gas Station Numbers

Vintage gas station signs are great for being able to see numbers at a distance. There are actually quite a few different fonts and colors available. I happen to like red numbers on a cream background, but you can also find red and white, black and white and navy and white.

Etsy is a good source for these vintage signs and you can find them from $10-$40. There are quite a few sellers that have them if you do a search on the site. Here are some sellers with these numbers for sale at the time of this posting: 26 Olive Street, Cousinm's Shop and Blue Bell Bazaar.

Marquee Numbers

Another great source of large numbers are numbers from old theater marquee signs. You can find these in metal or plastic in all different fonts, sizes and colors.

Ebay is a good source to find these or you can also find them on Etsy if you do a search or at flea markets and antique fairs.

Utilitarian Chic

Maybe because times are tough right now, but suddenly I find myself drawn to simple, utilitarian pieces that can do double duty--can be worn for work, but also worn casually on the weekend. I can't tell you how many nice pieces spend most of their time in my closet!

Chambray Shirt

This Japanese selvedge cotton chambray shirt ($88) is actually inspired by vintage workwear from the early 1900's. Stone washed and with a relaxed fit this is a piece that could easily be dressed up for work with a nice pair of trousers or dressed down for the weekend with khaki's and a t-shirt. I am obsessing about this silhouette of a pleated trouser, worn a bit loose that is then rolled up and cuffed and worn with heels. Serape Dress

This linen-cotton-silk knit dress ($598) from Ralph Lauren Blue Label has the look of a vintage textile from Mexico. Bohemian, but still polished and sexy. I love, this dress. Just wish the price tag were a little smaller! I would definitely lose that belt, though.

Cowboy Boot

DIY Headboard

Right now my bed is just on a metal bed frame. I've been looking at various options from purchasing an entire bed to just a headboard, but new beds or headboards can be really pricey.

Lately I've been leaning towards making my own headboard. First I was thinking about turning an old door sideways, but now I think will use an old fireplace mantel as a headboard.

What's great about a fireplace mantel is that you can upholster a piece of plywood to fit in the opening to give you a softer place to rest your head. Plus you have a ledge for photos or knick-knacks.

I've been scouting craigslist and will also try Omega Salvage in Berkeley to see if I can find one that's not too expensive. Will post a picture once I find something.

Patyka

I was excited to see that these all organic French bath and body products by Patyka are now available in the US. This company grows and extract all of the materials from it's products. I just bought the lime scrub ($14) and rosemary shampoo ($14). I love the bright and simple packaging. I purchased mine at Reform School, but you can also purchase through Patyka's online store.

Izola Shower

Izola has some of the coolest shower curtains. I love the artist series like this David Foote shower curtain ($60) I picked out for my daughter's bathroom. I also like their photo shower curtains featuring destinations like Vegas, Paris, or Venice (Italy).

Learn & Shower

Target carries great foreign language vocabulary shower curtains like this French version ($20). Also available in Spanish.

Stylish Storage

Let's face it, plastic bins may be functional, but they are certainly not very attractive for use inside the house. Here are a few storage choices I'm considering for those places where your storage container needs to be visible.

Wicker Hampers

I love these wicker hampers ($20-$26) from Bell'occhio which have flat tops so they can be stacked on top of each other. These would be great for paperwork in the office, or sewing/knitting stuff or craft stupplies.

Green Boxes

Nothing makes me think of lounging on a beach somewhere than a kaftan (according to wikipdedia the spelling "caftan" is also acceptable). Although, I would wear these kaftans below on any given weekend with a great pair of sandals or heels and some funky jewelry.

I am loving the simplicity, large scale, and rustic look of vintage industrial furniture right now. There are a few vendors that carry this style at the Alameda Antique Fair or you can find examples on line at sites like Get Back, Inc, Big Daddy Antiques, Factory 20 or Cleveland Art.

Right now I'm looking for some metal dressers as well as industrial shelving to divide the living room and dining room of our new place. Here's a few great examples of this style. I've found during my hunt.

Industrial Wood & Steel Shelving Unit

This shelving unit from Get Back Inc. ($2,800) stands over 6 feet tall (see photo above). It would be great as a baker's rack in the kitchen or in a library or living room.

Perforated Bookcase

This perforated bookcase from Cleveland Art has the look of an old locker room. Standing over 6 feet tall with nice deep shelves. Way better than the Ikea bookshelves we have now!

Metal Dresser

I wish I could find a couple of these metal dressers from Twenty Gauge or else one big longer version.

Express Strapless Jumpsuit

More on the budget side is this synthetic/spandex jumpsuit from Express ($79.50). Great going out look for summer. Wear it with strappy heels and a little clutch.

Robert Rodriguez V-Neck Jumpsuit

This sophisticated jumpsuit from Robert Rodriguez ($363) features a narrow slit in the back to expose just a glimpse of skin. A plunging V-neckline and a braided belt finish off the look. Available at nordstrom.com.

DVF for Spring

There are so many great pieces in the new Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2009 collection. Unfortunately, none of them avaiable yet, looks like they will start shipping mid-February, but the pieces are available for pre-order on the http://www.dvf.com/ website. Here are some of my favorite pieces from the collection.

Ponca Sweater Dress

This long-sleeve crochet sweater dress ($485) reminds me of a Missoni knit. Love the spicey orange and navy tones. This dress would be a great year-round dress with boots in the Fall or sandals in the spring. Unfortunately it won't be out until mid-April.

Kimono Sweater Dress

Here's another great dress from the collection ($285). Love the kimono sleeves and the persian print in shades of mustard, grey and orange. This dress ships mid-February.

Silk Jumpsuit

This silk jumpsuit ($345) with a hint of spandex is a flashback to the 70's. Love the drape of the front and the bare back paired with a chunky belt. Makes me want to go out dancing!

Harem Pant

I blogged about these when I first saw them come out in the magazines. Spring is all about the harem pant and I love this chocolate brown version ($198) from DVF which is a less extreme silhouette than some of the versions out there. It's a tough call between the jumpsuit or the pant!

I just found out that my very favorite design magazine, Domino, is no more! I have actually been checking the newstands for a few weeks now looking for the latest issue and wondering why I wasn't finding it...Tonight I came home and logged on to the website and saw the announcement posted. Ugh! Now this economy is starting to get really depressing!
